Azelaic Acid

Also known as: Nonanedioic Acid

Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid naturally produced by Malassezia yeast on skin. It inhibits tyrosinase, reduces melanin production, and has antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes. At 15–20% it is prescription-strength for rosacea and acne. It is one of the few actives safe during pregnancy. Effective for both hyperpigmentation and inflammatory acne.
