Urea

Also known as: Carbamide

Urea is a naturally occurring component of the skin's natural moisturising factor (NMF). At low concentrations (2–10%) it acts as a powerful humectant, drawing water into the skin. At higher concentrations (10–40%) it becomes keratolytic, breaking down the protein bonds in thickened or rough skin. It is particularly effective for dry, rough, or callused skin and is a key ingredient in treatments for conditions like keratosis pilaris.
