Also known as: EDTA, Edetate Disodium
Disodium EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is a chelating agent that binds to metal ions (calcium, magnesium, iron) in formulations, preventing them from destabilising emulsions or reducing preservative efficacy. It is used in almost all water-containing cosmetic formulations. Also acts as a mild preservative booster. Concerns about environmental accumulation have led to interest in biodegradable alternatives.
Comedogenicity ratings are based on the rabbit ear assay model. Individual skin responses vary. See our article on comedogenicity ratings for context.
